Katonah, NY – Feb. 5, 2025 – Joule Community Power is excited to announce a new partnership with the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) to promote community solar initiatives across New York State. This collaboration aims to support the state’s transition to clean energy, foster local action, and empower communities to take control of their energy future.
Through this partnership, Joule Community Power and NYPIRG will work together to educate and engage residents about the benefits of community solar. Community solar allows residents to subscribe to a local solar farm, reducing their electricity bills while supporting the generation of clean, renewable energy. This initiative is designed to make solar energy accessible to all, including those who may not have the ability to install solar panels on their own properties.
Key Objectives of the Partnership:
-
Promote Renewable Energy: Increase awareness and adoption of community solar projects, contributing to New York State’s clean energy goals.
-
Foster Local Action: Encourage community involvement and participation in local solar projects, creating a sense of ownership and pride and providing electric bill discounts.
-
Empower Communities: Provide resources and support to help residents make informed decisions about their energy consumption and savings.
“We are thrilled to partner with NYPIRG to bring the benefits of community solar to more New Yorkers,” said Mike Gordon, Founder and CEO at Joule Community Power. “NYPIRG is an incredible organization that empowers young people and engages community members as it protects New Yorkers’ environment. NYPIRG’s involvement here will supercharge the state’s clean energy industry, as it ensures that solar developers do well, long-term.”
“NYPIRG is committed to a dual mission of protecting the environment and consumers, and partnering with Joule Community Power fits with both,” said NYPIRG Executive Director Megan Ahearn. “Fighting climate change requires us to replace polluting fossil fuels with clean, renewable energy sources and this project will help facilitate that transition while saving New Yorkers money on their bills.”

About Joule Community Power: Joule Community Power is committed to developing a clean energy future for all. Through its comprehensive portfolio of community choice aggregation and sustainability services, Joule ensures the at-scale uptake and deployment of new clean energy resources, enabling municipalities to deliver on their sustainability objectives. Joule's programs empower municipalities to make energy decisions for their own communities, thereby enabling local decision-making and empowerment. In doing so, Joule is shifting New York State’s energy dependency from a utility-controlled, fossil fuel model to a municipally-controlled clean, renewable energy model for thousands of households at a time. As a first mover, in 2021, Joule launched the first and only opt-out community solar program in the U.S., bringing the benefits of solar—including guaranteed electricity bill savings—to entire communities. Additionally, Joule enables consumers and institutions to take action and benefit from the ongoing Federal and New York State investment in sustainability initiatives.
